If you don't have a US passport or GC, you need a US visa to enter US. At the border, you will get a new I-94 and an admission stamp will be on your passport, even though you cross the border by land. From this record on your passport, CIC will know that you are a student in US.
If you stay in US for more than 6 months, you need to submit your police clearance certificate.
