This is a gray area: if you are on H1b and you also apply for EAD, then when you use EAD to work, there are two consequences: one is you have to renew EAD on a yearly basis and two is that your EAD *MIGHT* cancel your H1b status. The second one is not really clear: Immigration has not provided clear explanation regarding this. The safe route is to take your H1b and not apply for EAD if you don't have a compelling reason to do so.
