You don't have to worry about anything.

1. Your H1b is approved in May, that effectively canceled your SEVIS record---your school was right about that. ICE will cancel the SEVIS I20 if the change of status to H1b is approved. Once it is canceled, you are not on F1 status anymore. And your school ISS no longer has anything to do with you: they cannot access your record anymore.

2. Since your H1b is approved in May, you have been on H1b status since May. Therefore, you are no longer qualified for OPT because OPT is for F1 only. However,

3. H1b can take classes and register for school. So your summer class and dissertation defense are no problem.

4. On the other hand, since you are on H1b, you can start working for the company any time after you are done with school and class.

5. So forget about OPT: you don't need it. Go ahead and finish your degree. Then start working. Good luck,
