resignation date question

When I hand over a resignation to the current employer, my H1 status will automatically terminate or the current employer need to inform INS? My resignation date must be consecutive or can I have couple of days overlay for instance: end here on Aug. 30, begin there on Aug. 25.(I have vacation days could be used)
