What is the expiration date of your old I-20? What is the start date of your new transfer I-20? Immigration rules allow F1 students to stay in the country for 60 days after graduation. So there can be a gap of 60 days between these two dates, but anything longer than that, you might be in trouble.
The SEVIS release date is different from the expiration date of your I-20: the release date only allows the new school to take possession of your SEVIS I-20, it does not have anything to do with your legal status. Your status is still decided by whichever I20 that is still valid. Releasing your record to the new school does not mean your old I20 is invalid when it is released. So if your release date is May 1, 05 and your old I20 expires on August 20, you are in legal status until August 20, not May 1.
Whether you can take summer class is also decided by your old I20. If it has already expired, then you are not a student on F1 status anymore, so you cannot take any class---you have to leave the country within 60 days. If it is still valid, for example, until August 20, 05, then you are still a student at your old school and you can do whatever things any F1 can do. If this is the case, then there is no problem if you drop all summer classes because F1 is not required to take summer class. Cancel summer enrollment does not mean you will lose F1 status: F1 does not have to do anything during summer session.
