Yes, it is allowed. That is what situation i have. I worked in plant biology and later changed to cancer study.

You can use your current work to address NIW issue and use your past work and achievements to show you are supeior to your peers than others. Your strong background is a good projection of your future success and contribution to national interest. Go ahead.
