Going back China w/o passport?

A friend of mine needs help:
He has been in US for a couple of years and now simple wants to go back to China (not coming back). Unfortunately he lost his visa two years ago. What is the easiest way for him to go back safely? Or must he apply a new one here at the Chinese Embassy?
