F1 student to green card

I am current a PhD student, will graduate at the end of this year. I want to submit my application for green card with NIW. However, someone told me that, if I were denied, I should not be able to keep my F1 status if I can't gruaduate in time. Is that true? Does anyone have similar situation like this? Pleas help.
