I think a relatively easy way is to talk to the other professors in his department, and talk to the professors whoes direction is not far from your hu*****and's research in the other departments. Stay at the same scholl so that all your courses studied can directly be used for his new program.It will save time.

Don't be too sad. All these will passed and you couple may have a new chance to change your life. It is fairly had to find job for many PHD in non-popular majors. However, finding a professor who likes to support you studying in a funded project is easier for your hu*****and.
