Social Security Card

Did anyone apply for a new social security card recently? I got my TN visa which allows me to work in US. When I applied for the social security card I was told to wait for about a month. The social security office said it won't issue me the card until it verifies my sumbitted documents with the department of homeland security. It seems that you can get the number right on the spot as long as you submit the required documents. Did they change the procedure?

The employer wants me to start the job ASAP and doesn't understand why it is so difficult to get the card. Actually I don't understand that either. Is there anything I can do to help speed up the process?
