When I applied for EAD in TSC end of January, I put a "post-it" on my application form, stating "if possible, I'd like my EAD start date to be 7/1/2005". For the same reason as you, I don't want to waste my EAD time. When I received the EAD March 1st. They did make it valid from the date I prefer and valid for a whole year. This happened in TSC, can't gaurantee in others service centers.
