What's your status now? If you already use EAD, your H1B is invalid so you can't use H1B to come back to US. AP can be used as many times as you want. I guess they just keep on stamping on the AP paper when you pass US immigration.

If your H1B is valid, you should use H1B to come back. It has not confict with I485 pending status.
