I didn't apply for the H1B visa stamp early last year because I didn't find an interview slot with the US consulate in Toronto during my trip to Canada and I didn't want to spend money and time in going for an interview.

You can go for a visa interview at the US consulate right after you land in Canada if you successfully make an appointment. Just plan early so that you can secure an interview slot with the consulate.
