If you like, you can appeal yourself. What you could have done is that you land first and then come back sometime later to pick up your child. Your case is very unfortunate but could have been avoided. Now you need to come up with a good reason why you did not apply for Canadian Immigration for your child. I think immigration officers will consider your case reasonably if you have good reasons. Never tell them that your child holds an American passport therefore does not need to immigrate to Canada.
