You can pay either Canadian dollars or US dollars if you are in US.
$550 is in Canadian dollars as shown in
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/fees.html#swpf. If you pay in US dollars, it will be $465 for pricipal applicant and spouse. See link
