If you were laid off last week, the company will usaually pay you for another 1 month or 2 month before the release, that means, you are still officially an employee of the the company, it is ok to ask for an employment later from HR, the don't have the excause to refuse, but not sure about the content of the letter. This happened to me.

Find a job asap.
