Before I went back to China and then used my AP to return, my I-140 was approved. If the I-140 is not approved, I would not use AP. It will be too risky. The reason is if your I-140 is denied, and you are not in USA, you cannot use AP to come back. Use you AP only after your I-140 is approved.
