You can ask a lawyer about it. My lawyer told me once that Database Administrator (DBA) is different from Software Engineer (SE) because DBA is an administrative work while SE is a programming work even both are IT related. For your case, the first one is research related and the second is engineering related work even you use the same skill set (say, Chemistry, Biology etc). But if the company is a research-oriented facility, a move is possible.
