-Not need. When the priority date is current (check the Visa Bulletin), he just files I-485 within US. But he needs to maintain his non-immigrant status (e.g. E3, H1) until he files I-485.
National Visa center (NVC) will contact the petitioner (the child's parent) and send the petitioner instructions for the immigrant visa applicaiton in Chna when the priority date is current, then the petitioner just needs to respond to NVC that the beneficiary (the child) has filed I-485 within US and ask NVC to stop processing the case in NVC. That is all.
