-He may just file I-485 by himself. Then, file I-824 just after his I-485 is approved, in case USCIS feel confused because some of the immigration officials are not experienced. USCIS will not approve the I-824 until the I-485 is approved even if he files it now.
After his I-824 is approved, USCIS will send it to National Visa Center (NVC). Then, NVC will contact him for the required documents. His spouse and kid will apply for the immigrant visa in Canada and of course, physical exam, fingerprinting and interview will be conducted in Canada if they are Canadian citizens or Canadian permanent residents.
