-The child (the sponsor) needs to file I-864 even if he/she has no income. If the father or mother still has a job (i.e. has income from employment) and also the child and the parents are the same household members (i.g. they live together and filed tax return as a whole family), then the parent's income can be used to support the parents' immigration. In this case, they do not need to find their friend to be a joint-sponsor, but the parent needs to file I-864A together with the child's I-864.
