I guess there is no way to know if it is still in the process. I remember applying for extension for my parents several months ago, I sent the application by express mail, by which you can know if the package was received or not. So next time remember to send important letters by express or registered mail, although cost more, it is worth it. The extension approved letters were received about the time when my parents' visa expired. So you might get it soon, and even if it arrived after your grandma's visa expired, she can explain this problem if she wants to come next time, I guess. Right now you can't do anything, but wait.
