-Right. Your H-1 status will be invalid if you stop working for your current employer. So, you have to ask the new employer to file the H-1 transfer petition before you leave the old employer. Thus, your status will have no gap if you want to be H-1B holder continually. After the H-1 transfer is filed, your status is pending and you don't have to work and it will not affect your H-1 transfer approval.
