-Their green card is invalid. If the illness prevented both of them from returning to US on time, they may go to the US Consulate in Guangzhou to apply for the SB-1 visa, but they need to provide the strong evidence (SB-1 visa is very strict). SB-1 visa can allow them to activate their green card. Otherwise, if they use the green card directly to reenter US, the CBP officer probably will ask them to abandon the green card at the port of entry, and then give them a B-2 status/I-94 to enter US, or ask them to choose to go to the immigration court to defend their green card.
-I would suggest them just simply to abandon their green card in a US Consulate in China and then, apply for the B-2 visa to enter US. If they want to get the green card again, you can just sponsor them to do it all over all again. This is simple way and avoid any pressure on them physically and mentally, especially they don't know English well.
