what if the i-485 approval notice has not even reached me before I need to leave the US? in that case, can I still come in with EAD card? 
-Print out the email or online approval information and go there to get the green card stamp.

I mean, if I have not signed up the email notification, I wouldn't know my 485 is approved and the card is coming; I would leave the country with my EAD card with me anyways..
-Right, but it is AP or EAD/AP combo card, not EAD. You had better check your I-485 status online before you leave US.
