Thank you so much. Need some clarification

After he submits the AP renewal (e.g. in December) does he have to wait until it gets approved before he can leave US? or can he go to Canada using his current AP which is still valid (until Feb 2015)?

If he leaves after submitting the renew application and it gets approved before the old AP expires does he still need to come back to US before the old AP expires or is it ok to stay in Canada (until the new AP expires) because there is no gap between the old and new AP?
