I think changing to H1 should

be okay. When I used up my O-1, I had received my I140 approval already. So I didn't bother to renew it. I read through the renewal requirment, there were still a lot of work to do. And I was told by our international office that I could also change into H1, so that I didn't have to renew the O-1 every year. To avoid this, seems like switching into H1 is a good choice for you. At least you can have three year at a time.

I used EAD instead, till I got my GC.
