-After they stayed in China for > one year without reentry permit, their green cards have been automatically void and thus, they can not use it to enter US anymore.
Three possible choices for them:
1. Abandon their green card in a US Consulate in China and then, apply for the B2 visa to enter US at the same time;
2. Apply for the SB-1 visa to reneter US to activate their green card if their delay return to US is because of their serious illness. They have to provide strong evidences to prove their illness which prevent their return to US in time. The US Consulate is very strict for issuing a SB-1 visa, so if your parents can not convince the VO during the interview, the VO will deny the SB-1 visa application and take away the green card at the same time. Thuis, it may result in their future B2 visa application difficulty.
3. They may use the green card to go to US, but the IO in the port of entry will take their green card away, and then may allow them to enter US with B2 status (give them B2 I-94). Your parents can explain that they had illness, etc. resulting in their delay to return to US, thus, the IO at the port of entry may allow them to enter US as tourists. But their green card will be taken away. The risk for this choice is that it is poss*****le the IO might not allow them to enter US, and thus they have to rerturn to China directly at the port of entry.
