He doesn't need a visa if he has been approved as a refugee. He can apply for a related travel document to go abroad.
I don't think he will be persecuted if he goes back to China unless he is a revolutionary and in the black list.
But his refugee status could be cancelled and he could be deported right away if he visits a country (like China) for which he claimed persecution, because the initial reason of he refugee status no longer exits.
For him, don't think about visit China until you become a citizen.
