help: Children travel to Canada

Hi.

My wife and I are on H1B visa, and both my sons ( 2 years old and 6 years old) were born in USA. My older son has an expired US passport and birth certificate; my younger son has only birth certificate. And we are planning to Canada for 3 days next month. My questions is:

1)Both of my sons need US passport or birth certificates are ok to enter Canada?

2)Can they back to USA using birth certificates without passport?

We may not have time to apply the USA passport. Thank you for your help!
