I did it before 9/11

It's not legal, of course. The law says you can not go to the 3rd Country (China) from Canada and come back to US (from Canada) using I-94.
The funny thing about my whole journey was, there were only stamps from Chinese Border & Custom Officer, hard to tell since they put them on the messiest page on my passport. since you are canadian pr, there will be no stamps in and out Canada, so you figure ...
If you have to do it, land cross US/Canada border (by car, bus, etc.), from my experience last year, land crossing is still fairly easy and hassle free.
good luck!
