about the H1 I-94 effective date: there are several dates: receipt date is 8/17/2011; the notice date is 11/14/2011; the H1 is valid from 9/24/2011 to 9/23/2014.

-It was 9/24/2011. So,your status is TN now because you just entered US from Canada about three weeks ago. If you want to get your H1 status any time, you just need to bring the H1 approval notice to go outside US e.g. Canada and come back to get the H1 I-94 at the port of entry and then, your status will be H1. If you just keep TN, nothing needed to do.
