-Normally it is about 3 months, no more than 6 months.
Q2: J1 has different length. Do you know if the length is related to the length of contract. For instance, 3-year J1 is applicable for 5-year contract, not 2-year contract.
-Your J1 status depends on how long your sponsor will support you and indicate it on the DS 2019. Your J1 status maximum is 5 years including all sponsors' support duration.
If your contract is 5 years, but your J1 in DS 2019 is 3 years, you can extednd your J1 status before your 3-year J1 status expires by getting a new DS 2019.
