It is somewhat risky to get the visa in Canada because if you can not get it, you have to go to China form Canada directly. So, just follow the lawyer's suggestions. I think you will be fine after the school to argue with USCIS or if necessary, just go to the immigration court to solve your status probelm. If you are out of US, you do not have this kind of right and choice. So, just be patient and everything will be OK. Just take some time. You also need to be quiet and wait and do not mix up with the school and let them help you out.
