Hi, there. It is quite simple.
(1) Tell them who you are and where you from.
(2) Tell them you got no financial support from Chinese goverment. All your money comes from US.
(3) Tell them in your letter that you are very interested in your current projector and you've obtained some good results and publications on it. This projector need additional more than 2 years to go.
(4) Show them that your employer wants you to stay until the end of the project. (Here, you may have to show a letter from your boss. In this letter, your boss should say that he/she will help you to apply for a H1-b visa after your J-1 waiver.)
(5) Thanks a lot and wish to receive their waiver application form.
