you may have big problems

1 You will be stopped and will not be allowed to enter China because your new passport does not have any record in their system,only passport issued in the US embassy can enter China, that is the reason why they issue passport also in the US, you cannot even get a Chinese visa even if you become a US citizen if you have any passport problem,

2 You can not get your green card stamp on a passport for public affairs

You have to ask your previous institution to change the passport for you, it is extremely good for you
