2 questions after the naturalization certificate

I just got my naturalization certificate. I was given a piece of paper during the oath ceremony saying that I should visit a social security office to update my citizenship status. My questions are:

Do I have to do this? Can I apply for passport before updating my status?

How and where could I apply for passport?
