Thanks for the repley. So there is no legal statment said the PTO can cover the gap as far as I can tell. I do hope there is one. I agree with you that both PTO and Unpaid leave do mean not working during the GAP. so I asked and then got a letter from my company and said that I do not work from the expiring date of old card to the date I have new card in hand. You never know what will happen to the I485 when the EAD has/had the GAP.
Now back to PTO vs unpaid leave, the differece is the employment termination. The question is that how to tell if the employment is termniated or not if PTO used. most of case it is not (as you are working for the same company after you got the new card).
