Out of status? please help.

I am an H4 holder. I will submit my I485 together with my wife's I-140. By using the receipt, I am planing to apply and use EAD. My question is: if my wife's I140 is denied, my I-485 will be denied too. In this case, I am not sure if my status is automatically returned to H4 status. I asked a couple attorneys, they are not sure. One says yes, one says no. I really don't know who is correct. Your any commends and advices are greatly appreciated.
