5-year bar is the result of refusal of admission. When he got turned away and now outside of US, nothing a lawyer in US can do. Was he told that next time he should get a visa to enter US (even with Canadian passport), if so he can demonstrate that he has overcome or can waive the denial reasonm such as INA 214(b) before US consular officer, and he can erturn with the visa and waiver. (as stated in 9 FAM 40.6 N4.1)
