He may apply for reentry permit for the travel which can allow him to saty outside U.S. for maximum of two years. It is very important for him to keep the GC valid. Otherwise, he will lose everything such as retirement benefits. Why doesn't he just find some other part time job such as working on Walmart, Chinese restaurant temporarily?
