Basically it is an administrative issue.

When your absence of registration information comes to attention of ISO, your SEVIS records will so updated.

You are fine until you come to USCIS for any application later. During processing your future application, USCIS will access your SEVIS records, and may determine your having been OOS which causes a denial.
