You boss can give you either J1 or H1b. If he wants to pay your less salary, he will give you J1. For H1, he must pay your regular salary approved by Labor Department. If you accepted low salary, you better not to talk about H1, that means you are asking increasing salary. If he will pay your pretty well, why just tell him directly you want H1b.
