Just tell your boss. That's the only way you can start your work if you don't have OPT.
If you do have OPT, then you may need to know if that company can and willing to support application for H1. If can, then you don't need to tell your boss now. If not, then you need to keep looking to find a company who can and willing to support your H1B.
