I485 less than 3 months !! SOS

Would someone tell me what is the average length of background check? I applied for 485 Adjustment of Status less than 3 months ago as a result of marriage to an US citizen. We had our adjustment of status interview a few days ago and we were told my passport couldn't be stamped because my background hasn't been cleared yet, and once it is cleared, the actual green card would be mailed to my home. We were also told that the clearance process could take anywhere from a few weeks up to 90 days. Does the process start when we submit finger prints, or after our interview?

I have to go to China in the next few days, would I encounter a problem upon returning to the US if I leave before I receive my actual green card? Thank you.
