Similar situation for many kids who were born in China and have their English name now.

Keep the official Chinese name for now so that everything is consistent for his/her college application. Your child can still use his preferred English name (except for the official documents) in College. By the time he applys for USA passport he can add/change to his English name.

You can also change to his English name now but just be careful not causing much trouble for his college application.
