in your case, don't bother

(1) To be able to work in the States at this point, you only need the EAD (employment authorization). Your H1-B is virtually irrelevant at this point. Just remember that the EAD is only valid for one year, so you'll need to renew it every year until the I-140/I-485 gets approved.

(2) Some people say you can still try for the 7th year H1-B, in case your I-140/I-485 gets denied. In your case, I don't think this will make sense. Since you will have exhausted the 6-year H status by the end of 2004, a denial on I-140/I-485 would mean that you will need to leave the country after the expiration date of your current H1-B.

As a result of the above two points, I would say don't bother with the application for the 7th year.
