Did the child get Canadian visa yet? kid might have problem getting Canada visa in the first place.

Not very safe, because CBP can deny kid's reentry based on the kid technically no longer has a school program to return to. Sometimes the the officer may overlook because they might just check the I-20 expiration date, if you want to try your luck.
