If your LG is applying EB-1a or NIW, I-140 will not be affected much at all. Of course, it's much better to have a job. If your LG is applying EB-1b, then he needs to find another lab in the same university to support his "permanent" position.

H-1b only has 10 days "grace period", which is quite flexible now.
