485 RFE and more

Hi everyone,
I have a complicated situation and need advice and help from you guys. Thank you very much in advance.
I am currently a postdoc and will be out of job tomorrow because my irresponsible advice does not have any more money and gave me short notice. Fortunately, I recently got a faculty job offer, but it will start in early August. I have submitted my 485 application via NIW in July 2007(my PD June 2006). This week I received a letter requesting for additional evidence to demonstrate that I am still working in the same field. My questions are:
(1) Starting from April, I will be out of job, do I still have legal status here?
(2) My wife has H1B, do I need to transfer to H4 now to maintain status?
(3) I used AP early this year, am I still eligible for H4 visa if needed?
(4) I have the offer letter from new school, how should I reply request for evidence? Can I just state I will be doing research in the same field. Do I need additional reference letters to support my statement regarding my future research, say from department chair.
(5) In worst scenario, say my 485 is rejected, do I have to leave US right way? Can I still apply for H4 visa to maintain my status after 485 rejection; again I have used AP before. Can I Still apply for new H1B based on my new job in US or I have to go back to China and apply for it.
